***Poll Watch***

This is the first of what will, hopefully, be regular updates on polling in the run up to the 2012 elections. The situation is complicated by the plethora of possible candidates, but once the parties have selected things will be become clearer. In the meantime I will be playing around with the best way to present the figures so they are as readable as possible.

In this poll taken between 17th & 18th Jan by CSA four polls were taken each with a different Socialist Party candidate.

Sarkozy (UMP) PS Candidate Le Pen (FN) Bayrou (MoDem) Besancenot (NPA) Joly (Les Verts)
27% 22% (Aubry) 17% 9% 6% 6%
23% 30% (Strauss-Khan) 17% 6% 5% 6%
26% 20% (Hollande) 17% 9% 6% 8%
26% 21% (Royal) 17% 10% 4% 8%

So if this, admittedly out of date, poll were to be replicated on election day then it would be a traditional scrap between the Socialist’s candidate and Sarkozy but given the closeness of the National Front figures with those of some of the less popular Socialist candidates it would be foolish to write of their chances of repeating 2002’s shock second place.
