Michèle Alliot-Marie, France’s Minster for Overseas Affairs is taking a battering from the press and the opposition for her handling of the Tunisian demonstrations of earlier this year. Not only did she manage to suggest that France was lending President Ben Ali a helping hand when it came to internal security but it has now emerged that she has been making trips on a private jet to Tunisia courtesy of some local businessmen. These allegations will do little to ease concerns that France remains wedded to a distinctly 20th Century way of dealing with international affairs; French interests first even at the expense of human rights and democracy and that its political elite remains intertwined with the rich and powerful in its former colonies.
